Our History

The International Women’s Club of Merida was formed in 1984. We create a supportive environment where English-speaking women can meet, share experiences, and pursue activities of interest within a Spanish-speaking culture. We are truly an international group with members from countries such as Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Columbia, Cuba, England, Germany, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Lebanon, Mexico, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United states. Our membership includes women from all age groups and diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. English is the official language of the club and is spoken with many accents and in varying degrees of proficiency, thus enriching the membership experience.

Our Goals are Friendship, Self-Improvement, and Community Service.
  • Friendship:
    Monthly meetings
Morning coffees and afternoon teas for members are hosted monthly by members in their homes, providing an opportunity to meet in an informal atmosphere.
Monthly no-host breakfasts are held in area hotels and restaurants, these are open to anyone interested in the IWC and potential members.

  • Self-Improvement:
Special Interest Groups (SIG) are informal meetings which provide a forum for the many talents and avocations of our membership.
English language play groups for children, book clubs both in English and Spanish, Spanish culture, yoga, Maya studies, and environmental awareness are just a few of our many interesting and informative activities.

  • Community Service:
Annual dues, and various fundraising events held throughout the year help suport the club’s charities.
IWC Scholarship Program sponsors post-secondary education and is funded hrough annual dues anddonations. Since its inception the IWC has helped many women from low-income families to graduate in fields such as nursing, veterinary medicine, accounting, and psychology.
Anticanceroso Hospital of Merida helps with all aspects of cancer treatment.
Hogar Nueva Vida is a shelter for girls age 7 to 15 who are in need of care, education, and a supportive environment.
